OMAHA, NE – Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson will visit with community and business leaders in 6 cities January 3 & 4, 2006 to discuss his plan to expand health insurance coverage for small businesses as part of his “Making Health Insurance Affordable” tour.
Nelson introduced legislation in November that would allow small businesses to band together to provide health insurance to their employees – a plan that would drive down health care costs for employers and expand health coverage for employees at Nebraska’s 30,000 small businesses.
Nelson introduced the Health Insurance Marketplace Modernization and Affordability Act along with Senator Mike Enzi of Wyoming, the Chairman of the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee. This legislation has gained positive reviews from a number of prominent groups including the Nebraska Association of Realtors; the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc.; Association of Health Insurance Plans; Blue Cross and Blue Shield; Association of Health Underwriters. This legislation represents the first time the state insurance commissioners, insurance carriers, and small business groups have all worked together to find a workable solution.
